Sivananda Yoga

About Yoga Sivanada Yoga was first introduced in the West in 1957, however has been practiced for thousands of years in India and the East. There are many different styles of yoga, the aim of every form is to connect body and mind, bringing flexibility and strength to the body and peace within the mind.

Who are the classes for?

This is a beginner’s class open to men and women. It benefits people of all ages and levels of fitness. Within a few classes you should be able to feel the difference in your body, being more physically aware, building strength and fitness. Yoga is transformational, giving mental clarity and more energy along with a positive attitude.

The class runs over a period of 6 weeks allowing the student to explore different asanas (posture) throughout the weeks. The classes are taught at a steady pace allowing each student time to develop at their own pace with the guidance and encouragement of the teacher.

After the class you feel relaxed, peaceful and energised. The difference with yoga to other forms of exercise is it gives you energy, without exhausting the body or tiring the muscles.

What is Sivananda Yoga? Sivananda Yoga is a branch of hatha yoga. In comparison to other types of yoga, Sivananda yoga is a less physically demanding form of exercise. Yoga gently awakens the muscles using the breath to help guide the body without straining. There is a slower pace to the classes compared to Ashtanga yoga. Postures are held for various lengths of time, working towards holding the postures for longer and developing each asana. This allows the breath to help guide and relax the muscles whilst strengthening, lengthening and improving overall flexibility.

In Sivananda yoga there is a set sequence of 12 asanas. They are a mixture of sitting and standing postures which are practiced through the class, variations of the postures allow movement of almost every muscle in the body.

Can yoga be practiced if I have back problems or injuries? Yes, yoga is very restorative as it strengthens muscles, it can help alleviate tension and pain within the body. If your injuries are more severe, you should check with your doctor before attending classes.

What equipment is needed for a class? Mats are provided. All is needed is comfortable loose fitting clothing with a warm top and pair of socks for the final relaxation.

Are there any religious or spiritual requirements? No, your yoga practice is as individual as you are. It can be practiced for its physical benefits alone. While others enjoy the benefits of relaxation, some people may be interested in the spiritual aspects. (I am planning to offer some half day workshops for those who may wish to pursue this).
